About the Race
The beautiful Fontana Lake offers an amazing venue for a 5K, 10K, and 15K open water race. The 5K loop swim course starts where the lake meets the Tsali Mountain Biking Trail Head parking lot and beach area. From the beach, swimmers will make their way out one of the lake’s fingers, around a point, across an open stretch of water to an island. With the island on the swimmers’ left shoulder, they will make there way around the island, back across the open stretch of water and into the finger leading back to the beach and start area. Swimmers doing the 5K will complete one lap. Swimmers doing the 10K will complete two laps and 15K swimmers will complete three laps turning for another lap around a special turn buoy near the beach.
Expected water temperature: 70-80F

Rules, Details, and Important Information
EVERYONE NEEDS TO READ THIS!
- ALL SWIMMERS MUST attend the pre-race safety meeting, which will be held on race day morning just prior to the race starting.
- 15K swimmers cut off time: You must be able to complete the swim in UNDER 6 HOURS. This means if there is ZERO current, you should be able to swim 1 open water mile in about 38 minutes. If you’re not within the final 500 yards of the swim within 6 hours, you may be pulled by the safety boats and shuttled to the finish line.
- Swimwear/wetsuit/tow buoys rules: Expected water temperature is 70-80F. There are two categories: Category 1 and Category 2 when you register. Category 1 is no wetsuits and will follow USMS swimming rules for Category 1 swimwear. In Category 2, wetsuits can be used as well as the swim-safe tow buoys. NOTE: If water temps are 78F or higher on race day, there will be no wetsuits allowed.
- Feeding stations: There will be one anchored boat on the course and one table at the start/finish area providing water, carbo drinks, and gels from Hammer Nutrition. All swimmers should consider having extra gels in their suits for use when needed, especially those doing the 10K and 15K swims.
- 10K and 15K swimmer laps: When you complete a lap and return to the start/finish area, you will exit the water and cross a timing pad to check in. You'll then return to the water for your next lap. Near the timing pad and re-entry into the lake, there will be a aid station table.
- You cannot hang or rest on any of the safety boats, even when getting water from a feeding station.
- No use of lower extremities to rest on or push off of the bottom of the lake to gain an advantage.
- You CANNOT have a personal escort kayaker for any distance. This race is not an escorted swim type of race. We will have safety support on the water as well as two aid/nutrition stations on the course.
- Swim caps and body marking will be provided which must be worn throughout the race.
- If you have any questions about your ability to swim this event, please contact the race director
